UPDATE on dog found sealed shut in a plastic bag.
http://hendrickboards.com/s/save-chamsky

Eight days ago Champ’s life changed forever. Although he didn’t know it, what was his darkest hour was also the beginning of a new life. He will have a long hard recovery, but he WILL recover. He’s a CHAMP!

He is eating well, but he will not drink water from a bowl. Because of this, S.A.F.E. Animal Rescue feeding him water with a syringe which he takes readily. I’m sure he’ll drink from the bowl eventually, but for now we’re perfectly okay giving him water this way. He’s not dehydrated and his wounds are healing well. There are still 3 wounds that are open and draining, but they’re not infected and getting better every day.

He sleeps almost all the time, as he is badly in need of rest to recover. When he goes to the yard to potty, he’s alert and aware of what’s happening around him. He just doesn’t have a lot of energy to pursue his interests right now.
He’s getting up a couple of steps on his own, but the last one is just a little too difficult for him so we give him a hand.

Your generous donations and support have been a huge help. Thank you! Because of you, he’s enjoying the softest blankets he’s ever felt in his life, has toys to snuggle with, and has the very best food and supplements with chicken and rice.

****END UPDATE****

When working in animal welfare you think you have seen it all. Then we heard of a story so tragic and overwhelmingly sad we knew we had to reach out and help the animal. This is a story about how a dog was found sealed shut in a plastic bag and left on a desk at the West Valley Animal Shelter. The photos and story you are about to read are graphic. Animal abuse affects us all. It is our responsibility to protect these animals.

The pups name is Chamsky. He was brought in a SEALED plastic bag and left on the clerk’s counter. When the clerk opened it, thinking it was a delivery package, she saw what she thought was a dead dog. After all, he was BLUE , covered with blood and wounds and not moving! The clerk rushed the animal to their onsite clinic. The veterinarian staff at the shelter was able to revive the animal. He was a matted and his body has untreated, infected wounds all over. They shaved him down and discovered ulcers covering most of his body. He is extremely malnourished, weighing only 7 lbs. This type of abuse takes time. Meaning the animal had to be in this condition for a while before his abusers sealed him alive in a plastic bag and dumped him on a desk. Just typing this story breaks my heart. Knowing what pain and torture he must have been through… like I said just when you think you have heard and seen it all.

The staff at the shelter were able to catch his abusers (a couple) in the parking lot who left him for dead after abuse and neglect. His abusers are now being prosecuted for animal cruelty. Chamsky has been held as evidence for the past week.  S.A.F.E. Animal Rescue will be the organization caring for this amazing pup. Chamsky will be on his way to WLVH/Dr. Slaton to get a complete checkup and get him back on the road to recovering. DONATIONS for his medical care are needed. Please consider donating to help this guy have a bright future. You can either donated directly here Safeanimalrescue.com/donations OR purchase one of our ADOPT DONT SHOP tees triggering a live saving donation for Chamsky and his recovery. An animal in his condition will have a long road to recovery but together we can help save his life !

Dumped by her owner- Save Roxy.

Meet Roxy. She was abandoned by her owner in this condition. She is obviously a victim of animal neglect. Emaciated and covered with severe mange. Roxy  is a 35 pound puppy Bull Mastiff and Staff mix. Clearly this situation could have been completely avoided if she had been treated much sooner. Second Chance Rescue NYC got her out as soon as they could, as they could not leave her there in pain, suffering and bleeding.

She is super sweet and holds no grudges. She is currently at a local veterinarian clinic in N.Y.  and will be up for adoption after her recovery.

A0964873roxy2 5-10-2013 8-11-31 PM 2268x1699This is a note from her rescuer.

” She licked my hand for most of the drive from M.A.C.C. (NY) to the vets in Queens. She sits on command, takes treats very gently, did not react when other dogs growled and barked at her and is fairly good on a leash. Her mange is very bad, and her skin is raw with deep sores on her face, but she was still playful and sweet, wanted to jump up for hugs but able to subdue herself. SecondChance Rescue needs donations for her”

adopt-dont-shopt-womens-tWe have partnered with Second Chance Rescue NYC to create the ADOPT DONT SHOP tee dedicated to raising the funds needed for her recovery. An animal this badly neglected will have a long road to recovery, but it is something we can do together! Roxy deserve that second chance at love and family. You can donate directly to her care or with every purchase of our ADOPT DONT SHOP tee we will send a donation in your honor to her care. Every dollar can bring Roxy that much closer to a life full of love and pain free.

Found Completely Blind, Black and Blue is Bruised and Broken

May 8th, 2013

blue-blogSweet “Black and Blue” is bruised and broken! He urgently needs our help. Poor Blue is severely emaciated (at just 17 pounds – at least 10 pounds underweight). He is all bones! Blue is completely blind, with only one eye bulging with glaucoma, which is surely causing him immense pain (the other eye is missing altogether). He has clearly been on the streets for a while, ultimately proving unable to fend for himself, even in garbage cans. Had he not been turned into the shelter, we believe he would have died of hunger, most likely within days.

Sweet “Black and Blue” is bruised and broken! He urgently needs our help. Poor Blue came to Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue, Inc. from the Manhattan shelter where he was brought in as a stray. He is severely emaciated (at just 17 pounds – at least 10 pounds underweight). He is all bones! Blue is completely blind, with only one eye bulging with glaucoma which is surely causing him immense pain (the other eye is missing altogether).

He has clearly been on the streets for a while, ultimately proving unable to fend for himself, even in garbage cans. Had he not been turned into the shelter, we believe he would have died of hunger, most likely within days. Dogs do not get any more vulnerable than this. Blue is working hard to regain sufficient strength to be put under anesthesia to perform the necessary surgery on his eye. He urgently needs an injection to the remaining eye to relieve the terrible glaucoma pain and pressure he has somehow managed to endure.

Blue is in such bad nutritional shape that it is difficult to assess how old he is. The shelter thought he might be a senior but the vet is inclined to think he could be much younger. Life (and human neglect) have left this poor dog bruised and battered. In his mind and in his heart, he is utterly black and blue. Please help Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue bring Blue back from the brink.

Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue, Inc. has created a donation page for Blue: http://www.youcaring.com/pet-expenses/emergency-please-help-black-blue-/58135. You may also send a check directly to Abandoned Angels to: P.O. Box 545426, Flushing, NY 11354. Abandoned Angels is a registered 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible.

We have partnered with Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue to help raise funds for Blue and his recovery. His road to recovery will be long but with your help we can see that he is given that second chance at love and life he deserves. With every purchase of the Equal Animal Rights tee or hoodie, we will send a donation in your honor to help save Blue.

April 26th, 2013

***Update 05-02-13 from Toledo’s nonprofit*****

Toledo is doing well. Spoke to Dr. K and they will be closing her wounds in the next couple days. She is eating and drinking and still on antibiotics. Sounds like they don’t need to put in drainage tubes, which is great news! We can’t thank everyone enough for all the support we’ve received on behalf of Toledo!! It’s been down right amazing!! If you haven’t purchased your t shirt from Hendrick Boards you still have plenty of time. $10 of every t shirt will go to Toledo’s care.

*****Update 4-26-13 from Toledo’s nonprofit*****

Holy Toledo is in stable condition. She was quiet last night and still really swollen. She is on tramadol and started hydro yesterday. She is still is still a little hesitant but is food motivated. Her progress is slow, but it still progress! Toledo ran out of soft treats last night so we are going to bring her more this afternoon.

*****END UPDATE*****

A bloody dog ran in the middle of the street. Men were beating her with sticks and rods. In trying to escape the abusers, she was almost hit by a truck and took cover under it to hide from the men.

That’s when Home FurEver Rescue received a frantic call for help and they responded immediately.

She came from an area know for dog fighting and our vet agrees that this looks like a bait dog situation. Today she is still in guarded condition. The husband of the director of the rescue managed to scare the men away and approached the truck with care. He called out to the little creature, shaking in a ball.

toledo-blog2This bloody mess wiggled her way out from under the truck to our director’s husband with her head and shoulders down and her tail just wagging. She showed him with kisses.

They immediately sped off to the emergency veterinarian. After several hours of wound care, the veterinarians gave the guarded prognoses.

Toledo, “Holy Toledo” to some, is in critical condition and is recovering from the battering received from her abusers. According to the vet, Toledo is in shock and has lost a bit of blood. She has numerous puncture wounds on her head, neck, chest and shoulder area, which is common in bait dogs. Her lungs and throat are filled with air due to the punctures and tearing. She is receiving antibiotics, fluids and continuous would care. She is not eating or moving much, but the fluids should help.

toledo-blog3The area in which Toledo was rescued in Detroit is known for its high crime rate, dog fighting rings, and drug activity. It is more than likely that Toledo was used as a bait dog in dog fighting. Bait dogs are non-aggressive dogs used to train other dogs to be more aggressive.

Toledo is still in guarded condition and will have a long road of recovery in front of her. Toledo is moving slowly but is still affectionate and adores the receiving end of affection.

Hendrick Boards has created the Do Something tee and hoodie to help raise funds for Toledo. With every purchase, Hendrick Boards will give Home FurEver $10 to help save Toledo.

Shot 3 Times, Left to Die, Koa Deserves a New Beginning

** KOA UPDATE! **

4/29/2013 – Update from Koa’s nonprofit- I know everyone has been anxiously waiting for an update and we apologize for the delay. The last few days have been rainy and stormy here so it wasn’t possible to get him outside for some new photos. This is Koa this morning outside of our vets office. You can see how well he has healed. It’s really hard to believe he is the 311684_550715458305318_932048902_nsame dog! What we are noticing also is that the better he feels, the more dog aggressive he appears to be. What we hope to do is send him through a board/train program for dogs with aggression issues once he is better. I have talked with a trainer and he said that regular exercise is a part of the rehabilitation program. Being that Koa is heartworm positive, training won’t be possible until he has healed, gone through heartworm treatment and recovered from that treatment. We are looking at a minimum of 45-60 days before this will be possible. For now, we are very happy with his progress and the work of our amazing vet, Dr. Vaughn at Columbia Hospital for Animals!

**END UPDATE**

Just a few days ago, a picture surfaced of a dog laying on the side of a road. You could tell that something horrific had happened, leaving half of his face sagging. Tennessee Death Row Dogs initially suspected that he had been hit by a car in the road and had survived. Immediately, the rescue organization found folks via Facebook that went out to look for him but sadly, he was no longer there. The next morning, the rescue decided to try the local animal control in hopes that he had been picked up. When they learned he was there, Koa, as he would be called, was picked up immediately. When the rescue met Koa, despite his condition, he walked up to us with his tail feverishly wagging. That was surprising to everyone at the rescue because they could smell the infection in his head and shoulder from just a few feet away.

What the rescue soon learned was that animal control had removed one shell casing from his head. Koa had been shot three times, once in the forehead, once in his jaw and once in his shoulder. If that isn’t awful enough, Koa also has a face full of bite marks. The rescue organization suspects that Koa was possibly stolen, forced to fight for his life and wasn’t a fighter so he was dumped on the roadside and shot.

Whoever did this to him probably thought he was dead and just drove away, leaving him there like a piece of garbage. The injury to his jaw makes it painful for him to eat and he is emaciated as a result. Infection had long set in and bloody fluid leaked from his bullet holes. Tonight, Koa sleeps peacefully at the vet and is stable. He will need to remain there for at least a week on fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory meds and pain medication.

Tennessee Death Row Dogs is hopeful that he will pull through. Koa has a will to live and everyone wants him to have the best care possible. For those who prefer to send donations by mail, they can be sent to TN Death Row Dogs, PO Box 1015, Spring Hill, TN 37174.

Hendrick Boards has designed a limited edition tee, Save Animals, to help Koa survive. Every tee sparks a donation of $10 to Tennesee Death Row Dogs to help Koa get the surgeries and medical treatment he needs.
