This past weekend while some volunteers were out looking for a lost injured dog in a rough part of town, they stumbled upon our sweet boy Ryker. As you can see from the pictures, Ryker is in really rough shape and has had a very hard life on the streets. His back leg is mangled and he will need surgery once his body condition improves and he can endure surgery to have his leg removed. The vet guesses that the damage to his leg was caused by being hit by a car or some other serious trauma. It’s heartbreaking to see him drag his leg and he has sores all over the portion of his foot that drags on the ground.
He also has a significant skin infection and mange. He is just so itchy and uncomfortable with sores all over his body. However, despite his horrible condition, he is as sweet as they come. He is very gentle and loving and was likely someone’s pet at some point in his life. The vet guesses he’s about 3 years old and looks to be an Australian Shepherd mix. Once his skin heals, he gets some groceries and his leg is cared for, he’s going to be a dashing young man! He will likely be at the vet for close to a month and then he will have to have surgery to remove his leg.
Expenses of boarding and surgery for Ryker will be significant for his rescue Scout’s Honor Rescue (located in Houston, TX). Please consider donating to help cover the cost of his surgery. Remember no donation is too small, and anything you can give is greatly appreciated! You can make a donation for his care on our website at www.scoutshonor.org.
Or you can buy a tee that will trigger a donation to help save Ryker. We created the LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING tee and tank dedicated to raising funds to help Ryker through his recovery. With each tee you can show Ryker LOVE and change his life!

This bloody mess wiggled her way out from under the truck to our director’s husband with her head and shoulders down and her tail just wagging. She showed him with kisses.
The area in which Toledo was rescued in Detroit is known for its high crime rate, dog fighting rings, and drug activity. It is more than likely that Toledo was used as a bait dog in dog fighting. Bait dogs are non-aggressive dogs used to train other dogs to be more aggressive.
same dog! What we are noticing also is that the better he feels, the more dog aggressive he appears to be. What we hope to do is send him through a board/train program for dogs with aggression issues once he is better. I have talked with a trainer and he said that regular exercise is a part of the rehabilitation program. Being that Koa is heartworm positive, training won’t be possible until he has healed, gone through heartworm treatment and recovered from that treatment. We are looking at a minimum of 45-60 days before this will be possible. For now, we are very happy with his progress and the work of our amazing vet, Dr. Vaughn at Columbia Hospital for Animals!
Starved and left for dead.
