In December 2017, we all saw the horrifying video footage of a helpless dog, named Lady, being beaten and strangled. The footage went viral on social media and garnered attention across the nation and around the world.
Lady's 69-year-old abuser has been arrested, charged with animal cruelty and indicted.
Austin Pets Alive! was contacted because of the immense help this sweet girl will need, and in Texas they are one of the only organizations that work extensively with pets who have extreme medical and behavior issues. The judge, in this case, wanted her to go to an organization that does a considerable amount of work with pit bulls and gives them every chance they deserve. Austin Pets Alive’s medical triage center, dog behavior program and their expertise in working with the dogs that have no other options, who are often pit bull-type dogs, is why APA! was selected to receive Lady.
“First and foremost, our expert behavior and medical teams will ensure that Lady now experiences the care, compassion, and love that all dogs should receive from humans,” said Mike Kaviani, Director of Lifesaving Operations at Austin Pets Alive!. “Her care will likely require months of support.”
Lady immediately received medical support for both physical and mental wounds. She had a broken leg that needed to be tended to, first and foremost. The APA behavior team worked closely with Lady on any fear and trust issues and any other emotional trauma. The sad reality is her care required months of support.
On March 2, 2018, Austin Pets Alive! made a huge announcement.
"We are thrilled to report a happy, new beginning for sweet Lady, who came to Austin Pets Alive! after suffering horrific abuse in Texarkana. Lady has since been adopted into a loving forever home, and she is thriving, finally able to live the peaceful, treat-filled life she deserves!"
Her adopter shared that she is quite the love bug, “just [wanting] to snuggle and sleep, usually belly up, in any crevice she can find, be it between me and the back of the couch, my legs or between my head/neck and my pillow."
We are overjoyed for Lady and her new family. Because of your purchases and support since December, Lady's life can start anew.
