Birdy was hit by a car and left in a shelter.
I read this story and immediately felt so sad for this poor girl. Birdy was hit by a car after trying to escape a pack of dogs trying to impregnate her. She was hit by a car and could not move. She was brought to a high kill shelter with no way of moving… with no chance. Rescuers saw her story and immediately went into action. Now this sweet girl needs your help. This is a critical condition animal!
She was rushed to emergency care last night and she almost died. Birdy had gone to her MRI last night for further diagnostics to see if she was a candidate for surgery. All of her testing and films took a few hours and shortly after she had coded due to her Pneumothorax getting rapidly worse - - she could not breathe. Her medical team had already drained 400cc's Sunday night into Monday morning. She became blue and her chest had significantly swelled. Heather writes, “ The Doctors told us to brace ourselves as this could be it…” On top of all this bad news, the MRI and C-scans determined that she was not a candidate for surgery. This was a huge blow. Her disks were compressed THROUGH her spine -- no longer outside the spine.
Second Chance Rescue NYC writes, “We have had 3 specialists look at her and lastly she is bleeding internally. We hoped we could get her into surgery asap but we are told she is not a candidate and had she been a candidate they would not have been able to operate on her due to her shortage of air, she is also not eating. We need a miracle right now folks, we were up all night afraid to go to sleep and dreading the call that would give us the news we did not want to hear-- I wanted to vomit.”
This is an uphill battle friends. They are doing everything possible to do right by Birdy and she is on the HIGHEST pain management possible which is still coming up short. Heather writes, “I got off conference call with Patti and Connie last night and we prayed for a miracle. We got a small victory at 3am when Patti called and the Dr's told us her breathing is regulating. Now we wait for ANOTHER surgeon to review her one last time this morning for the official plan.”
UPDATE 12-29-16 : Sometimes you can see the hopelessness surrounding something or someone and you ask yourself, WHAT CAN I DO TO CHANGE THIS? Looking at that shelter picture and seeing the loneliness and the depths of grief that I could not even form into words -- Second Chance Dogs could not leave her. We are forever grateful to her Fosters Sue and Kari for holding her up, giving her love and shelter and providing the most compassionate care anyone could possibly provide. The doctor had ordered for Birdy to be on crate rest for two weeks before starting therapy. While resting comfortably at their homes, she was provided with several rehabilitation exercises by Kari & Sue — these exercises were to remind Birdy that she has back legs and she needed to remember how to use them, and that's exactly what happened. Her strength of character rose above one of the worst of life's surprises that was served to her. Birdy's crate rest is coming to an end she will officially start her outpatient Rehab next week.
UPDATE ADOPTED! One of the most haunting images that will always be sleeping in my head is her picture to the left. Sitting in a dilapidated kill shelter paralyzed. Rescuers had her seen by multiple vets and they all said to euthanize her because she would never walk again and it would be inhumane to keep her alive, her discs were compressed completely through her spine. Well, homie don't play that. They put her in physical therapy for months and we are honored to announce that this beautiful dog can now walk, run, play and is adopted by an incredible woman in Massachusetts. In lieu of her adoption fee, her adopter continues physical therapy with her and will be making our BIRDY a therapy dog. My beloved BIRDY, we believed in you from the beginning and you now have your happy ending, take it...it's yours.
