Marigold was brought in by an animal control officer after being found on the side of the road on New Years Eve.
1/2/20: This is Marigold and she is in horrific condition. This poor old girl was just brought in by an animal control officer after being found on the side of the road on New Years Eve. Her skin is some of the worst I've seen in a long time. Her nails are atrocious. And her belly is very bloated. The shelter called Second Chance Rescue NYC to take her and of course said yes. She was medically transported to Blue Pearl Specialty Hospital.
She is in very serious condition with a wide variety of concerning issues and the team at Second Chance Rescue NYC are still waiting on more diagnostics from tests that were ran. She obviously has a serious skin condition that is the worst I have ever seen, they did a scrape last night and they will know more today. She was very dehydrated, after they x-rayed her entire body and did an ultrasound, they found foreign objects in her belly. She is being tested for Cushing's Disease. Marigold is also having a hard time getting around in her hind limbs because her nails were so long and infected.
Rescuers will know more after the ER doctor reviews her test results. This is an extreme case of neglect, she is not microchipped, she is estimated to be 10-12 years old but may appear to be older due to her very decayed and deserted state.
I know this is very painful to look at but we cannot look away. Marigold needs help. No animal should have to suffer like this.
RIP 1/5/20: Yesterday Marigolds red blood cells were destroying themselves, her medical team raced against the clock to try to narrow down where the source of bleeding was coming from and why. Jennifer Brooks, president at Second Chance Rescue NYC, spoke at length of all of the tests and procedures Marigold could undergo and what she could not immediately undergo due to her very fragile state.
Jennifer told her group to brace themselves but they would leave no stone unturned. Marigold had blood transfusion and she was finally stable by 5pm and was doing great. She seemed happy. Then Marigold passed away in her sleep at 12am. Doctors did everything they could. When a call comes in at that hour, you stare at the phone for 10 seconds before you pick it up because you already know she's gone.
Jennifer said, "I’m very sorry we could not save her. I did everything to give her a fighting chance but her body was tired. I wish she would have had the opportunity to have a loving family that would hold her hands with love. Every dog deserves that… to have their hand held with love. They live in our hearts. The universe took her home. I love you.”
It is important to note that just because Second Chance Rescue NYC lost Marigold that doesn't mean they no longer need our help. In fact, they need our help now more than ever.
The vet bills are in the thousands after trying to save her life. So please donate OR purchase a shirt that triggers a donation to help SCR NYC. I know this hurts but Marigold will never be forgotten and Second Chance Rescue will never stop saving animals.
