[ R.I.P. - Update ]
Second Chance Rescue write "Love and compassion is what she felt in her last few days here with us, I'm confident of that. Me on the other hand, I'm utterly devastated and my heart is shattered. I looked into her eyes each day and saw the fight. Yes she was sick, yes she had a very uphill battle and the odds stacked against her but I never, not for one minute believed she wouldn't make it. There's nothing more I wanted to do than to hold her sweet little body and give her soft kisses and let her know she will be ok, she was loved and was to have a life of unconditional love from here on out. Her skin was so badly infected, just wrapping a towel around her caused scabs to tear off. She would look at me and with those deep eyes I felt she knew she was safe, knew she was loved. Paige has crossed the rainbow bridge and I'm sitting here trying to process my thoughts as I write this.
Surrendered in such a devastating physical condition, only to then contract Pneumonia and be placed on the kill list at the ACC, we could not stand aside and let that happen. Second Chance Rescue NYC stepped in and saved Miss Paige from her death sentence. She was of course rushed to one of, if not the finest, ER Vets there is in NYC where she received the best medical care and attention possible. Our girl was quickly diagnosed with Cushings disease. One of the worst cases we have ever seen. Her abdomen was beyond distended and her tiny body covered in sores and bald from the severe neglect she had endured previously. Her tail a mere bone hanging from her backside. She had the "backyard breeder standard" ear chop which left her with two flaps of skin pointing upwards. What Paige never had was obvious, Paige never had love. Well I loved her. I loved the moments we shared. The way she knew "Good girl" and responded by looking not just at me, but into me. Paige touched my soul, as I know she did to so many others who have followed her videos and posts in the past week.
Cushings disease left untreated caused Paige to not only have a compromised immune system, but left her with almost no immunity whatsoever. When her "owner" dumped her at the ACC she immediately contracted whatever was in the air. Pneumonia is dangerous in a healthy dog, in Paige's physical state, it became treacherous. She was unable to fight off the virus compounded with all of her additional ailments. Her heart could not withstand the fight she needed to generate and at about 11AM this morning she peacefully passed.
To the volunteers at the ACC who showed her love for the first time and pleaded for her life we thank you for your efforts and for the opportunity to have met sweet Paige. For everyone who commented, liked and shared our posts of Paige we thank you. To our amazing supporters who sent in donations we are eternally grateful for your generosity. Every single dollar is put towards the animals in our care and while Paige is not here with us any longer, we must continue to save more lives—because of all of you many others will have a second chance.
To Paige: Run free sweet darling. Be at peace, your happy self. Know you are loved by so many, and will not be forgotten. Yesterday while I could not touch you I had visions of holding you against me, wrapping my arms around you in my lap, and you finally comfortable, being able to nap. I was confident I would be seeing you today. I know I will see you again and I will get the chance to finally hold you. I'll love you always little one. -A stranger who loved you, RIP."
[ END UPDATE ]
We are blown away and overwhelmed at the outpouring of support for sweet Paige! When we first saw her, we cried. Paige's photos are heartbreaking. Her eyes are so sad and haunted, as if she's given up. Do not worry sweet Paige, we have not given up on you! We are here to save your life!
We know these images are hard to see but we must focus on saving Paige and giving her the best care possible. Will you join us?
We do not know much about Paige. How she got this was is a mystery to vet staff and rescuers. We do know she was not used as a bait dog or in dog fighting. The rest of her story is being investigated. Her body is riddled with open sores along with old and new wounds. It is hard for her to move because of the pain. She has been diagnosed with pneumonia. The pneumonia had her down in the dumps so she was put on oxygen. She is in emergency 24 hour care because of her condition.
We really just want PAIGE to know she is loved and there are thousands upon thousands of people rooting for her! She definitely needs to start feeling it because this baby has a long road ahead of her. For now we need your help with Paige's ongoing intensive care.
