Raya was sitting at the shelter with labored breathing.
CODE RED! Raya is a critically injured dog who was sitting at the shelter in Brooklyn, New York. This dog needed out of the shelter and taken to the Emergency Vets immediately. Volunteers at Second Chance Rescue rushed to the shelter to medically transport Raya to their Emergency Vets where doctors were waiting to stabilize her.
Animal Control suspected Raya had been hit by a car but since she was brought in as a stray its impossible to know what happened.
When Raya arrived at the ER she had very labored breathing and needed immediate intervention to see how bad her pulmonary contusions are. Raya’s lacerations to her face and head injuries are a huge cause for concern. Since Doctors noted that her face had a lot of pain sensitivity they will need to determine what damage was done to her face and skull.
Doctors are awaiting results of an ultrasound that was performed because Raya also has a concerning mass in her stomach. She is around 7 years old and needs time to realize she safe. The vet techs at her clinic say she is the sweetest.
UPDATE 4-1-19: The results of her ultrasound did reveal a very big mass and free fluid, she was bleeding internally due to this mass. She is undergoing an emergency hysterectomy as we speak, this procedure is taking up to 5 hours. Her ovaries, spleen , etc are being removed. These unexpected costs have added an additional over $4,000 to her medical bills and she will be hospitalized for another full week to recover.
UPDATE 4-9-19: SCR will be getting the biopsy results back that were sent off post Raya's hysterectomy surgery. There was a very dangerous mass on her spleen and rescuers will update once they know what that was. She is recovering very well under Dr. Parvers care in NYC. Hopefully she can be discharged from the ER soon.
UPDATE 4-26-19: LOOK at her now! She is medically cleared and is looking for a foster or adopter! Talk about a happy ending! YOU all did that. WOOT. Raya would love nothing more now than someone to love her and keep her outta the streets so she never knows this pain again. Are you her person? Please apply to foster or adopt this happy tail wagging, love muffin at nycsecondchancerescue.org
