Serenity was dumped in the streets with a tumor covering her face.
First, know she is now safe and at the emergency vets where they are working around the clock to safe her life. Yes, she can be saved but this is not going to be easy. As hard as it is to see these images just trying and put yourself in her shoes. I am just trying to help.Serenity was found abandoned on the streets of southern Texas. She was clearly abused and horribly neglected before being thrown out like trash. What you see is a large tumor taking over her entire head and covering one of her eyes. She is still able to see thank god. Animal control found her and took her back to a city shelter were she sat for 5 days... yes 5 days before rescuers were alerted to her condition. Dallas Dog RRR specializes in saving animals like Serenity and we are here to help.
UPDATE 8/9/20 I just got an update from Serenity's rescuers at DDRRR. Sadly they are not getting the news they had hoped for. Her tumor is invasive, inside her skull and mouth. Serenity presented to ADC Critical Care for further evaluation of mass encompassing the entire face. They performed aspirates of the mass and have submitted slides to ZN labs for evaluation. In house cytology is consistent with a malignancy with severe secondary necrosis and inflammation. There was no evidence of transmissible venereal tumor on aspirates, which would be the most treatable of tumors in this location. In the absence of TVT, treatment options are limited.
Surgery is not an option due to the extensive local spread. Palliative radiation therapy could be considered to decrease inflammation, but may only extend her life. Her rescuers at Dallas Dog RRR is still discussing options best for Serenity. The good news is she is in no pain, she is showering her rescuers with love and is eating incredibly well. DDRRR is blessed to have so many amazing people on her team including a surgical team, oncologist and critical care specialist evaluate her and they all agreed on the findings. They will do what's best for Serenity.
UPDATE 8/11/20: Serenity is doing great and even playing with her foster mommy and rescuers Patti! This is huge you guys! She is eating great and drinking well too. We are hoping she can start gaining some weight. She has already begun initial medications to help with a few issues including pain. Dallas Dog RRR are waiting on several specialists to see how to proceed. No matter how much time she has left Serenity deserves to be loved. She is so loving, constantly giving kisses and she just wants to be right next to you. Please continue to support her if you can.
UPDATE 8/14/20: Ok, so Serenity's rescue momma took her to another appointment for the results on some tests and she will be starting more treatments. Her favorite part of the day is when she gets her pancake breakfast hahaha. Dallas Dog is doing a few more consultations so stay tuned. Her spirit is so good, she is happy wanting to play with my dogs. Yesterday she even tried to chase the cat at the vet! The doctors said her quality of life is good and she is in no pain at all. She is a HUGE lover and leans in to give kisses to her rescuer. She slowly goes in and bam licks you on the face hahaha! Please continue to support this amazing girl. Her story has taken the world by storm!
UPDATE 8/25/20: Quick update. Serenity is doing incredible and loving life! She is running around with her other rescue friends, she is eating 4 times a day and playing with her toys. She has already exceeded the expectations of her specialist. She is a brave warrior! Her foster mommy wants to say thank you to every who continues to support Serenity and her journey. For the first time in her life Serenity is feeling love.
Rest In Peace 8/31/20: I hate to tell you this. I am writing with tears running down my face but Serenity has passed on. She passed in the arms of her rescuer and foster mommy Patti. I want to first thank everyone single one of you who supported Serenity and Dallas Dog RRR and their decision to save her. I want to thank everyone who shared her story, donated and sponsored her with a mask. You support means more to me then you can know and your support for Patti and Serenity does not go unnoticed. I know you love this special girl just as much as we do.
Serenity came to Dallas Dog in early August with the diagnosis of Chondrosarcoma, a malignant type of bone cancer that eats away at cartilage. It was in the advanced stages and the doctors all agreed there was no treatment. Rescuers consulted with specialist about her quality of life and all agree she would make a great candidate to be spoiled and loved unconditionally as time permitted. It was at that point we decided to make her a HOSPICE, in rescue it means that she is loved and spoiled like crazy and given medical treatment to keep her pain free and comfortable.
Patti Dawson, President of DDRRR, was Serenity’s foster mom and caregiver. Serenity was happy and enjoyed life. She would eat three four times a day and loved snacks. She was feisty and brave. Serenity loved other dogs and anyone she met.
Serenity was forgiving and accepting of everyone, she loved people, when they visited she would go right over to them wagging her tail nudging her head into you until you pet her! She craved the attention and loved every bit of it.
Serenity was a beacon of light, an inspiration and loved without judgement. Serenity lived every day to its fullest. I admired her and her ability to forgive and love unconditionally. Serenity quickly became the voice for thousands of other animals like her.
My friends at Dallas Dog RRR were attacked on social media for their decision to care for Serenity. They saw facebook once again turn into a place of hate. But they stood strong behind their decision and behind Serenity. They knew she didn’t have long with them but deserved to be loved for what ever time she had. Serenity surprised even her doctors and specialist in how healthy and strong she became over the past few weeks.
Then, this weekend, Patti knew it was time. Patti could see Serenity was ready and Serenity told her rescuer it was time to say goodbye. Time to usher Serenity into heaven. In tears, Patti said goodbye. The entire team at Dallas Dog RRR and Patti are devastated but know they did the right thing for Serenity. She flourished for weeks and that’s why Patti stood behind Serenity. Serenity felt love for the first time in her life. Every animal deserves this chance be loved.
I know you all loved and cared for Serenity as much as we do. Thank you for that. I know she and Patti both felt your love and your prayers over the past few weeks. I love you guys for that. You may not realize the impact you have on animals like Serenity but it is huge. Thank you.
