Layla was tied inside a burning house crying for help.

Second Chance Rescue was contacted by one of their South Carolina vet partners when Layla was brought into their hospital after she was critically injured in a house fire. Rescuers were informed that no one was home at the time of the fire, and a neighbor heard Layla's cries for help and saw the house was ablaze. Layla could not escape, because she was tied up in the house; she was being burned and screaming for help.

There are a lot of in-discrepancies in the story, so SCR doesn’t know how the fire was started or why she was tied up unable to free herself. SCR wouldn’t dismiss illegal activities, at this time, but they don't have the full details as this just happened. This is under investigation by police and fire.

Layla is on heavy fentanyl pain medications and feels no pain. Layla has suffered severe burns to her face, ears, and head. She needs immediate vet care, burns treatment, x-rays to check her lungs and heart for damage due to the fire. This will be a very long challenging and expensive case, there will be several rounds of debriding, and multiple bandage changes daily. Second Chance Rescue has taken Layla into their rescue, and will spare nothing, that she needs to get through this horrendous ordeal.

UPDATE 4-8-19: We received an update from Layla’s medical team today. As hard as it is to look at her like this, she is healing and she is pain free. The doctors are happy with how the burns look underneath her bandages. She has been debrided today, and lots of dead tissue was removed which is a great thing. Nurses are hand-feeding her roasted chicken, that she gobbled up happily. She may not have mattered to her previous “ owners” but this baby girl has an army behind her now, who all have shown so much love and concern for her.

UPDATE 4-12-19: Sweet Layla having her burns medicated today. As hard as it is to look at her like this, her medical team is very pleased with how she is healing. She is having her burns debrided once a day, and the special burn ointment is applied to her wounds. She is in overall good spirits, and has been so sweet to her doctors and nurses.

UPDATE 4-16-19: We are all so happy to see our sweet girl Layla, up and about at the hospital, making her rounds. Her wounds are looking a lot better, and the doctors are pleased with how she is healing. She still has to have them debrided, and her special ointment applied daily to keep the area clean and promote the healing process. She is still on pain medication, but they have been able to reduce the dosage, as she is feeling a lot better. Her appetite is great, and she is eager to go out for walks and is acting more and more like herself, each day.

UPDATE 4-20-19: SCR is now accepting applications for Layla for a medical foster/adoption. She is about 2 years old, and very well mannered. Second Chance Rescue will start interviewing to make sure they find the best place for Layla to continue to heal. Please go to www.nycsecondchancerescue.org to apply for Layla!

UPDATE 6-3-19: Layla is still looking for her forever home! Now, she is living her best life in foster Care with an amazing family. Layla, is about 2 years old, and is so loving and sweet, you wouldn’t know all the pain and suffering she has endured. Layla, loves to play, be silly, and roll on her back for some good belly rubs. She is good with most dogs her size. She is all ready to find her forever. Please go to www.nycsecondchancerescue.org to apply for this sweetheart.
